Open notes from a base view in same adjacent pane?

When viewing a base in Obsidian, I can open any listed note in a pane to the right, which is very handy for viewing the note content while still seeing the index provided by the base. What I’d like to do which I haven’t been able to figure out is have any additional note I open from the base open/display in that same pane to the right, instead of in a new pane/tab.

Is there any known way to accomplish what I’m describing?

  1. Pin the base tab.
  2. Click an internal link in the base.
  3. Move the new tab to a side-by-side pane.
  4. Click freely on internal links in the pinned base. They’ll open in the side-by-side tab.

More specifically: Clicking on an internal link in a pinned base opens the link in the non-pinned tab that mostly recently had focus.
