OneNote alternative to Importer

I’m migrating from OneNote and sharing an alternative to the community Importer plugin.

The alternative is a utility called OneNote MD Exporter. Its creator (alxnbl) originally wanted to migrate to Joplin. The utility also has a raw Joplin export but I used the Markdown export option. Here is the utility’s Github repo: https://github.com/alxnbl/onenote-md-exporter

The community’s Importer plugin has a critical limitation for OneNote. It flattens all hierarchical structure, puts all non-text media into a single folder, and doesn’t link back to the non-text media. Basically I would have to re-create the structure and links after import, and makes the resulting import a manual re-do process.

Alxnbl’s Exporter utility re-creates OneNote’s hierarchical structure as parent-child folders, puts non-text media as a “Resources” folder at the same folder level, and embeds links to these resources in the markdown. I found this export much less manual re-do than the Importer method.

So I wanted to share this alternative method for migrating off OneNote. Hope it helps others!

P.S. I should have noted this Exporter’s markdown format displays correctly in Obsidian. It is Github format, as far as I can tell, but can be configured.

I was trying it. Got some errors as return, but I can’t give up.
Trying to create a failover solution for when Onenote crashes and destroys itself because an update or something decided that I am not allowed to take notes and work on my education.
The “official” importer is making me want to hit my head on the wall because I am not getting any approval from the admin of the educational company to allow obsidian to do it’s magic.

My next step is to import the notebook into my local windows account and see what I can do with it, before I jump into the possible mess.
If that works, I will try to create a second vault to test out the alternative you just presented.
