Something about Obsidian triggers the “Apple” menu in the upper left corner of the screen. Just clicking into a note or switching vaults can through the focus up to that menu.
I thought it was an artifact of the theme (AnuPpuccin). It’s not. Changing themes doesn’t solve the issue.
I thought it was the position of the Dock. It’s not. I’ve moved the Dock onto every available position and hiding mode, and the problem remains.
I thought it was Sonoma (when the issue started) or Sequoia. Maybe, but I’ve found nothing in the developer docs of Apple Help about a phantom triggering of the Apple menu.
I thought it might affect all apps. It does not. Only occurs with Obsidian.
I thought it might be a keyboard issue, but probably it isn’t since this is occurred on my former 2019 MacBook and now occurs on my new M3 Max MacBook.
I’d love to fix this issue, but am clueless on where to start. It’s not preventing work, just an annoyance.
I think it’s always clicking - for example, if I click into a document the Apple menu opens instantly. Not every time, but frequently.
I’ve tested this in the Sandbox vault with no Community plugins and experience the fault there, too.
I used Migration Assistant when I transferred machines. The vaults were transferred as part of that. Sure, a setting could have been carried over. I could nuke and pave, but this issue is not grave enough to do that.
I agree with Rigmarole that it’s likely something coming from the OS or something unique to that account outside of Obsidian (a setting, added software, etc.).
When you have a few extra few minutes, I would switch to another user account or create a test user (System Settings > Users & Groups → Add user…) to see how Obsidian behaves in there.
Then we’ll know if the issue is only in your main account or system wide.
I agree, this is a local issue, and is probably not caused by Obsidian (v1.8.1 installer 1.7.5), but since it is only occurring with Obsidian and no other app there is likely to be something about Obsidian that at least abets the culprit. Maybe not.
I thought it was BTT or other utilities, but the problem occurs on a fresh new user account with no third-part utilities in the background under Sequoia 15.2, in addition to my normal account.
I thought it might be hardware, but what kind of hardware issue only manifests itself with a specific app?
Anyway, I’m hoping maybe someone will stop by with a been-there-done-that similar experience.
Apple allows two ways to access and control the UI:
via mouse (point and click)
via keyboard shortcuts
what you need to check is your custom shortcuts in Obsidian, because you added a shortcut already in use by MacOs itself.
Or, go and deactivate some focus shortcuts under MacOs’ System Settings>Accessibility. On older versions of mac, I was able to tick off these defaults to focus UI elements.
Check your keyboard mapping (keyboard language), is it English and did you buy your Mac in China/Asian countries or in the west (I’ve bought my last Mac in China too and need to use English language as keyboard mapping layout otherwise many keys are a bit uncomfortable to type)
Do you use secondary input devices (USB, Bluetooth, etc) to type in / control your Mac?
Also, do you have any of these apps: raycast, Alfred, keyboard maestro or installed? (Fact is, apple allows to focus ui elements through keyboard shortcuts, on your Mac something triggers the shortcut to focus the apple menu). I don’t believe that you’ve a ghost on your Mac .
What applications are you launching on startup?
Maybe check a nearby apple store if you really can’t find a solution ? It seems you checked already top and bottom.
