Obsidian Sync - new laptop - misplaced local vault under and previous vault. - .obsidian question

What I’m trying to do

Help ….please.

I have a conundrum. New Laptop at Christmas .. yea!! In setting it up I found an old version of my local vault and somehow inserted that under the main vault that had been working fine. I have extracted the subfolder and identified what files are the latest version using diff and Claude! I have a Mac mini, new laptop, iPhone and iPad. 4k files.

Things I have tried

Help ….please.
Environment: I have a Mac mini, new laptop, iPhone and iPad. 4k files. Running obsidian sync and typically loving it.

I have a conundrum. New MAC laptop at Christmas .. yea!! In setting it up I found an old version of my local vault and somehow inserted that under the main vault that had been working fine or alternatively I may have synced to an older cloud vault version.

I have extracted the subfolder and identified what files are the latest version using diff and Claude! I think some of my devices are syncing to the correct vault and the new laptop is syncing to the older version.

Question: How should I handle the .obsidian portion? can I just delete and let it come down from cloud via Obsidian sync?

I have obsidian.md off while working through this. Not sure how to reconnect in this state.

Thanks in advance. Greg

If the sub vault was inserted as a folder, its settings file was in a location Obsidian doesn’t expect and so didn’t affect anything. (Obsidian expects the settings file to be in the main vault folder). You can safely remove it.

For the main vault, you shouldn’t need to do anything special about settings other than check Settings > to make sure it’s setup the way you want.

Of course it’s always good (vital!) to have backups whenever making any big change. If you don’t already have a backup system, you can make a copy of the vault for now.
After you can follow Obsidian’s friendly backup guide (which can help you backup your other files too).
