Obsidian empty

I can’t find a descrition of this issue.
An empty Obsidian, all my files gone.

I worked in Obsidian in the morning, did not close it ( I don’t always close it). Several hours later came back to it. On the left was all my notes listed, but when I tried to open one I got a message that said there was no such note. I tried several other and got the same result. I could not open any of my notes.

I though maybe restarting the app would help. So I closed Obsidian and reopened it this time there was nothing at all in it and I got a welcome to Obsidian, let make your fist note message. All my notes were gone.

I’ve been using Obsidain for about 4 years, never had a problem. There were no obsidian folders when I searched for them. This was frightening. I managed to find an Obisidan folder in my user library under cloud.

MacOS 13.6.7

Has any one had this problem? What happened? No back up running that day.

I’m still trying to get Obsidain back up and running (day 5).

What I’m trying to do

Things I have tried

Under some circumstances, iCloud will conserve space on your computer by deleting the local copy of files. If that happened, you should be able to locate them in the Finder and refresh them.

In my experience, iCloud is more reliable than it’s sometimes perceived. Personally, I use iCloud for very select apps, mostly Apple apps. Other than that, I sync with Chronosync and a USB storage device.

Where is your vault on disk? I’m assuming iCloud Drive/Obsidian/{VAULT-NAME}/.

What Amontillado said about iCloud removing files and folders when it feels like it. To prevent this on macOS, make sure this toggle os OFF under iCloud Drive’s settings.

Also, once things are sorted out, you’ll want to think about setting up a backup plan if you don’t have one already in place. More details here:

Thank you for your response. I’m just trying to work my way through what happened. But this is helpful. Yes those are my settings under Account storage.

I’ve been using this for 4+ years without much in the way of thinking about the settings. The folder/vault I thought I’ve been using was in Documents, that’s what I remember. I dont’ know what I called it - probably HomeObsidian. Box has been my back up.

When I re-opened Obsidian to a empty Obsidian (horrible adrenaline rush), I did a laptop search for Obsidian folders. There was nothing, no Obsidian folders, the folder/vault I’ve been using was gone. I later found an Obsidian folder in Box - which is where my back up are, I thought- that has only a few files in it. And all after 3 June.
I used Combo Cleaner to find any Obs folders on my laptop since there was nothing in a regular search. It turned up an Obsidian folder (in my user library: (users//library/ Cloud,) but there its most recent note is before 3 June, missing the last three weeks of June. The folder in Box - which is where I thought the back up was- that has only files FROM 3 June .

Something happened the 3 of June? But what? and why did did that something take till last week to make itself felt? Something nasty happened.

Right now when I open Obsidian, its asking me to set up a vault. And I don’t know what to do. Any suggestions? After using is for 4 years I now feel I don’t know enough, or anything, about how Obsidian works.

Maybe Box is the issue.

I don’t know what Box is, so I can’t be of any further help with that, unfortunately.

In Obsidian’s vault switcher (“Manage vaults”), you can choose Open folder as vault and point the Finder at a folder to open an existing vault.
