Obsidian doesn't open

What I’m trying to do

Trying to open the obsidian application, it doesnt show up anywhere and appears in task manager for around 10 seconds and then closes.

Things I have tried

I’ve tried reinstalling the app, installing older versions, restarting my pc and nothing seems to work. I dont think plugins caused it becuase I haven’t installed any new ones for a few weeks and last time I opened my vault a week ago it worked. Note that the whole obsidian app doesnt open, not just the vault.

I think that to get some appropriate help, it could be worth adding some more context  :

  • What device are you using ? What OS ?
  • Where is your vault located on your device ? Can you still access it ?
  • Do you use any sync services to sync your vault across devices ?

Sorry for the lack of information, I’m using an HP Victus 15-fa0000; using Windows 11.
The vault is on my documents folder and I dont use sync for any devices. I’ve tried changing locations for the vault but that hasnt changed anything either.

I had a similar problem on the company computer due to the Panda Antivirus updates. Got a reply from the admin: “Try tomorrow.” I guess it needed to go through some cataloguing to allow it.

Check if some antivirus or a similar app is “protecting” your computer.

Cheers, Marko

I’ve only got windows defender, so I added obsidian to exceptions but it hasnt changed anything.
I have learnt that when I turn off the computer while obsidian is still running, this error shows up:

My Windows days are long gone by now :innocent: … But when I encountered any cryptic looking errors, my 1st step was always to search where the error could come from… and try to find a solution

After that, I don’t think it’s a necessarily good idea to reboot a computer (any OS) while applications/programs are still running…

I mean, unexpected crash can happen and the device can recover without any (apparent) issues… but there’s always a small chance to get corrupted “things” (files, etc…) as a result…
(Well, I ran into that ages ago, at least  )

I think I remember stumbling upon topics out here where other users also had issues launching Obsidian without setting up an exception in Windows Defender … but that error could indicate some other issues that could be worth to take a look at, maybe ? :woman_shrugging:
