Notes as Folders / Folders as Notes?

I find myself creating a note at the root of each folder that acts as an index for that topic. i.e. Recipes folder has a note called “_Recipes” where I can make a list with definitions, hotlinks, categories, intro paragraph, etc.

How nice would it be if the folder, itself, were a note? Is there some way that’s already been established to accomplish this?

Yes, there are multiple plugins for that, for instance, GitHub - LostPaul/obsidian-folder-notes: Create notes within folders that can be accessed without collapsing the folder, similar to the functionality offered in Notion.
