New notes no longer open in stack mode

Hi!
I’m having trouble with stacked tabs in Obsidian. Until recently, when I opened new notes they would stack inside the current tab group (replacing the active tab or staying inside the stack). Now, every new note opens in a separate tab instead of stacking, and I can only get them into a stack by manually dragging.

How can I get new notes to open inside the current stack again, without having to drag them manually?

Are any of your tabs pinned?

Do you see the same behavior after turning on Settings > Community Plugins > Restricted Mode?

no, there are not pinned and the same behavior is observed after turning on/off Restricted Mode

With open note to the right

“Open to the right” creates a new tab group. Use “Open in new tab”.

(As a side note: It’s strange to me that there doesn’t seem to be a way to control whether new tab groups are stacked.)
