My notes keep corrupting randomly

What I’m trying to do

I have used Obsidian on my macOS (MacBook Pro) for a couple of years now.
I only use it on desktop, not on my phone. I only use it locally, and do not sync (except for taking manual backups of the vault). I do not have any plugins or custom stuff either, since I only use it for simple note taking.
The problem is that some of my notes get randomly corrupted in the following way:

  • I can see the note title in the index on the left.
  • I can seemingly open the note, but it does not contain any text other than the title.
    – Looking at the corrupted note, on the down right corner of the window the note info tells me that the note contains zero words but XXXX characters, where the character count responds to the original note content.
    – But the note is empty and lost.
    – This is a recurring problem.
    – This emptying of notes does not seem to happen immediately after I have written or closed a note, but can affect also notes that I wrote a year ago.
    – Recently this is getting worse with not only one or two empty notes but more.

Things I have tried

– To not completely lose my notes I make a manual backup of the vault every day. (I copypaste a daily version of vault into my OneDrive cloud.)
– The snapshot function does not help as usually the lost notes are older than seven days.
– I really like the interface for note taking but the problem is driving me crazy and I am [this] close to ditching Obsidian.
– I tried to see this Forum and Reddit if anyone else have had similar problems, but did not really find any helpful solutions or experiences.
– I would be thankful for any advice – what is actually the problem and how to fix it.
– Please be mindful that my Obsidian skills are really basic and I am looking for straightforward solutions instead of complex ones.

Where is your vault stored on your Mac, more precisely ?

I’m asking because what you’re describing makes me think about “sync” issues where some files are being offloaded and aren’t fully and locally accessible to Obsidian
And I can only guess that it might still happen if your vault is stored in your Document or Desktop folder and iCloud is syncing these … and/or Optimize Mac Storage is enabled (in your Mac’s Settings > Apple Account > (iCloud) Drive).

I’m really not sure though

But the current location of your vault might still help to know what might be going on
(Which version of Obsidian (app and installer) you’re currently using might help too)

Hi Pch, thank you for thinking about it!

I also wonder if this could be some kind of a file sync problem.

My vault is stored in my Document folder.

The “Optimize Mac Storage” setting is disabled. I am not using the iCloud for syncing.

I just recently installed the Obsidian 1.12.7 version (with 1.12.7 installer), and before that I was using the 1.8.4 version (I don’t know the installer version).

Since the vault is in Documents, I would first rule out macOS/iCloud touching that folder even if you do not intentionally sync the vault. In Finder, open one of the “empty” notes with a plain text editor or run in Terminal. If the bytes are still there but Obsidian shows blank, it points to an Obsidian/rendering/index issue; if the file is really zero bytes, something outside Obsidian is rewriting/offloading it. Also consider moving the vault to a simple folder like and back it up with a tool that preserves versions, not copy-paste over the same backup.
