Mobile iOS Support Audio Recording during sleep / background

iOS “Error” for audio recording.

On iOS, when recording is started and phone is put to sleep by pressing the “sleep” button on the right side, I’m seeing 2 scenarios

  1. The recording fails and the audio file on iOS shows “Error” on the playback image.
  2. The recording stops while the phone is in sleep mode but continues recording when the phone is “woken” shortly after being put to sleep.

On MacOS (Sonoma 14.5), Obsidian 1.6.7, the audio recording continues while the Mac is in sleep mode.

I’m fairly certain that I’ve used the recording feature on iOS in the past, while the phone was in sleep mode, and the recording continued (evidenced by the yellow dot in the upper right corner of the screen).

Unfortunately this issue revealed itself during a time where the recording was of importance.

Note: I also just subscribed to Obsidian sync and setup on all devices prior to this occurring if this is of any relevance.

The devs will chime in but I do not believe this is a bug.

This is due to the way iOS handles background apps and tasks vs MacOS. MacOS is a desktop environment so background tasks and apps are allowed to function as they should.

Apple has, on iOS, background apps are put to sleep when they are not in the foreground or the primary thing open, at least when they are 3rd party apps (not Apple Notes, Reminders, etc.) So, when you put your phone to sleep, the audio recording stops because Obsidian is not allowed to function based on rules Apple has regarding 3rd party apps in the background.

Thanks for the reply. It seems that there is some allowance for this with 3rd party applications on iOS / iPadOS devices. I use Notability on both because I love the ability to record and taken notes (primarily hand written with Apple Pencil) and then afterwards be able to tap on a specific part of the handwritten note and listen to the audio from the time of writing. Aside, it even replays the handwriting as it happened. Occasionally the devices will sleep, or I will intentionally put them to sleep, but the recording continues. You’re able to see the recording is still active via the yellow “pill” on the native clock that cycles between time and mic icon.

renamed and moved to FRs.

This would be most useful! Recording in the background is standard for any voice memo app. This limitation discourages one from recording audio in Obsidian at all, opting for the native iOS Voice Memos app or a third-party one.
