Markdown table as Dataview data source?

What I’m trying to do

I’d like to use a markdown table as a Dataview data source. Is this possible? Mechanically I don’t really see a way for Dataview to provide for this (what would the data source specification be?) but it would be great if it were possible. Something like (spitballing)

TABLE WITHOUT ID
FROM tables_in("path/to/note")[0]
WHERE ... filter here ...
etc...

Things I have tried

Converting the table into [dataview:: fields] but that’s really inconvenient.
