Macos copy as rich text and paste into another application with formating intact

What I’m trying to do

I have a formatted document (headers, bold, numbered lists) that I want to paste into an email with formatting preserved.

Things I have tried

  1. Copy/Paste from either Reader View or Editor View (document pasted as ascii Markdown)
  2. Copy/Paste from Preview (document pasted with terrible formatting)
  3. Share the document (document is sent as a .md file)
  4. Open/Copy/Paste the Obsidian document in another Markdown reader (works as expected)

All of the existing comments seem be “this just works” but all seem to be Windows based.
