Lost plugins and configuration after recent update

Obsidian updated recently and now nothing is working. it looks like community plugs have gone. If I install the ones that I remember it looks like the settings are lost. I pay the monthly fee for the official sync.

Does anyone know a way to recover this? The set-up was a lot of work that I did quite a while ago and would struggle to repeat.

Well, plugins are written for a particular version of Obsidian and plugin developers keep projects alive by patching and updating their work on a regular basis to stay compatible with Obsidian.

Obsidian changes all times, otherwise what reason would be to update?
Therefore, it’s natural consequence that plugins throw errors/don’t work anymore as expected or stop to work altogether after big changes of the main software, Obsidian in our case.

Solution
Don’t update just because there’s a new update to download. I don’t think slightly older versions of Obsidian “impair” the use of Obsidian itself. Said this, always ponder what you do with software and if plugins are actively maintained. Some scrutiny/self assessment is necessary, before any big changes.
All problems happen for reasons.

To prevent data loss you should use backup solutions of your Os (Mac, Win, Linux) to save copies of your data on an external drive or at least USB key. The latter are really cheap nowadays.

The more technology advances, the more users are required to think more consciously what they do with their machines.
One stop solutions are not possible, bc everyone has different needs.

Non-free systems like Win or Mac motivate users to consumerism habits, such “comfort” leads to a loss of user control, which is necessary to avoid all kind of problems dealing with computers or smart phones.
