Loss of all written things in the app

Ive lost all my progress in writing in the app on Mac. I have lost all links, folders and everything work which was built around for 3 months and im wondering how to get it back, or if theres anyway to get it back?

Hi there, I’m so sorry to hear about your situation. Losing months of work is incredibly frustrating, and I completely understand your anger.

Let’s try to troubleshoot and see if you can recover your data. A few things to check:

  1. Are you sure you’re opening the correct vault?
Sometimes, Obsidian opens a new or empty vault by default. Try going to File → Open Vault and look through any previously used vaults.

  2. Check your file system directly.
Obsidian stores everything in your system folders as plain text Markdown files. Use Finder to locate your vault folder manually. Try searching for *.md or a filename you remember.

  3. Look in Time Machine (if enabled).
If you had Time Machine backups running, you might be able to recover your vault folder from an earlier date.

  4. Cloud syncs (iCloud, Obsidian Sync, Dropbox)?
Check the sync or version history to roll back changes or undelete files if you used any syncing service.

If none helps, please provide us with more context, like whether you used Obsidian Sync, iCloud, Git, or something else, and we’ll do our best to help.

Ive found my lost work in finders, which is very calming and good to know. So how do i get them back on the app?

Regards Josief

Glad to hear you found your files. You didn’t mention much about their current state or structure, but if everything looks intact, the next step is to open them in Obsidian as a vault.

Here’s how you can do that: Create a vault from an existing folder

That should bring everything back into Obsidian as you remember it.
