Live Preview: Support footnotes in tables

Very valuable; with additional QOL for footnotes added in 1.6.X (don’t remember which, think it was 1.6.5) I was surprised this wasn’t revisited. This has major implications for everything from academia to TTRPGs; footnotes are often used to cite literature, to provide added context for experimental protocols that use tables, and for sources in TTRPG tables. And those are just the instances where I personally have come across this being an issue.

I just got the need to do a footnote in the table, and much to my surprise it didn’t work. So I did a search if this was a bug in 1.8.4, and found this. It hasn’t worked ever it seems. That’s a shame, so count me with the ones who want this to be implemented.

What’s a bit surprising is, that ^[1] can be shown in live preview as a footnote. So the rendering mechanism is already there. So it should technically be easy to render [^1] as well in live preview?

Current workaround for me is, not using obsidan footnotes (with links) in tables, and just use ^1.

But still a solution for this would be great and should be easy to implement (because rendering style is already available in tables).

I think it’s especially important because table width cannot be adjusted, and using footnotes can help here.

Apr 2026 - this is still an issue. It’s nearly 4 yrs and this is low hanging fruit.
