to test I opened a new vault and clicked on the “create a link” link in the “Welcome” note so that I had 2 notes.
I then typed out “create a link again” at the bottom of the “Welcome” note
Then simply switch to the “create a link” note, check the Backlinks sidebar and the sentence from the previous step appears in “Unlinked Mentions” but there is no option to link that mention even after fully expanding the section until you can see all of the text in the other note.

and here is the “Welcome” note within the same vault, as you can see the button shows up as it should in the outgoing links sidebar but not the backlinks one
Update, i’ve now also tried deleting and re-downloading the AppImage so that the Installer Version is also v1.7.7 but unfortunately no improvement on the situation.
I’m using a linux virtual machine on an Acer R751T Chromebook that natively has ChromeOS 126.
This is my linux version info:
PRETTY_NAME=“Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm)”
NAME=“Debian GNU/Linux”
VERSION_ID=“12”
VERSION=“12 (bookworm)”
VERSION_CODENAME=bookworm
ID=debian
HOME_URL=“https://www.debian.org/”
SUPPORT_URL=“Debian -- User Support”
BUG_REPORT_URL=“https://bugs.debian.org/”
but the arrow to expand the section still appears when I hover my mouse over, I used to use this button all the time and it broke with no update to my system
