Japanese PDF text not being displayed in Obsidian

The Japanese text in PDFs that I import into Obsidian are not being displayed. English words that are in amongst the Japanese text are the only things being displayed. I have tried several PDFs with the same result. The same PDFs display properly in Logseq and I can copy and paste the text from a PDF into another application. I am not sure if this is a bug. Any guidance in pinning down the cause of this issue would really help me.

I am using the latest version of Obsidian (V 0.12.19) on an Intel Macbook using macOS version 11.6（20G165）Bug Sur.

I think I am starting to make some progress in hunting down the problem. It happens only when I am using the community plug-in “Annotator”. I will try and contact the developer of this plug-in.
