iOS: Toolbar disappears when using floating keyboard on iPad

Steps to reproduce

  • Open a text note in Obsidian iPad app
  • Touch to edit text/open keyboard. Note the editing toolbar is shown above the keyboard.
  • Use the pinch gesture to turn the keyboard into a floating keyboard.
  • Note that the toolbar has disappeared.

Did you follow the troubleshooting guide? [Y/N]

Yes

Expected result

I have been using Obsidian on the iPad with the floating keyboard for almost two years. Prior to today, the toolbar would remain at the bottom of the screen while using the floating keyboard.

Actual result

The toolbar disappears.

what happens if you tap on the note?

What do you mean? Tapping the note text just moves the editing cursor.

Looks like I can’t edit the original post, so let me add screenshots here.

If you tap on the note, does the editing toolbar re-appear?

No it doesn’t.

thank you

I am experiencing the same issue.
there were no problems 1-2 weeks ago.
It may be related to an iOS update.

same problem here.

2 posts were merged into an existing topic: Android Mobile tool bar not appearing in Split Screen (phone) mode

I have the same problem.
It seems like the only work around is to leave the floating keyboard. Do what you need to do. Then come back to the floating keyboard.

Same for me on my iPad😔 I frequently switch back and forth between my iPad and phone (Android) and the sudden disappearance of the toolbar on my iPad has been a HUGE pain, and made it a nightmare trying to adjust or clean up formatting. I’ve tested with a brand new clean vault too, to be sure there were no theme, snippet, or plugin issues

Thanks for all the confirmations. I’m pretty sure it’s a regression in Obsidian 1.8.10. The toolbar was working in the evening and gone in the morning, and that version has a date of 3 days prior so I think it probably auto-updated overnight. (there’s no way to confirm 100% since there’s no app update log on iOS, as far as I know). There was no iOS update in that interval, but I was at least one version behind at the time. After noticing the missing toolbar, I did update to the latest iOS version to see if it would fix it (it didn’t).

I hope this regression is on the list to be fixed. I know it sounds on the surface like there’s an easy workaround, but, at least for me, the full keyboard isn’t viable. It covers too much of the screen to see more than a few lines of text, and doesn’t support swiping to type.

My workaround so far has been to use a different text app for notes, and copy them back into Obsidian so I can still use sync. But Obsidian has had such an excellent app for so long, I’m hoping to return to it for note-taking as soon as this is fixed.

A few days ago I noticed the same problem on my android tablet. Everything worked great before. I use Xiaomi pad 6, android 14. When I turned on the floating keyboard, the same problem occurred on my Samsung S21FE.

The issue of the disappearing mobile edit bar also arises when using an external keyboard on the iPad and choosing to minimise the native iPadOS predictive text toolbar (or if you turn it off all together in iPad setitngs).

If you enter an instance of Obsidian with the predictive text toolbar already minimised, the Obsidian mobile editing bar will not show until the native toolbar is expanded again. However, if you have had it expanded and minimise while in obsidian, Obsidian’s mobile editing toolbar will remain onscreen until the app refreshes or you exit/re-enter with it still minimised.

I’m also experiencing this issue. The tool bar is crucial on ipad since there is no tab key on the floating keyboard.

I’ve also noticed this problem and it greatly impacts my typical workflow. Makes using the Apple Pencil with Scribble much less effective. The floating keyboard is wonderful for it being useful but out of the way. Hoping this bug will be easy to fix but I’m grateful there’s a workaround to use the full sized keyboard.

Will be fixed in v1.9. no ETAs.

Can I please suggest rolling out the bugfix before the next update? It’s such a deal breaker and we have no way to downgrade to a functional version.
