iOS shortcut to convert markdown to PDF

To export a formatted PDF file in Obsidian use the built-in Shortcuts app in iOS or iPadOS.

  1. Create a shortcut in the share-sheet section of the Shortcuts app.
  2. Choose the workflow which creates formatted text from markdown (I use the German version and don’t know the exact English name for it).
  3. Choose the workflow to create a PDF. You can set to include margins and whether the file should be overwritten if it already exists.
  4. Finally add the workflow to save the file to your documents.
  5. Give the shortcut a name and a symbol and you are finished.

In Obsidian choose “Share” from the three-dots-menu of a file and then your shortcut. It asks for the saving location (if you did not deactivated it in the Shortcuts app). Embedded pictures, links and formats are saved but not included PDF files.

If you need to choose an individual file name you have to include additional steps into you shortcut workflow. The default name is “PDF-Document”, if you did not set it to overwrite the file. A count-up number is automatically added if a file is already present.
