Ideas for representing notes as a chronology

Hi, @davecan. I just took a glance at that Stack article. File date stamps behave as I expect them to.

  • If I move a file, the create date remains as is
  • If I copy a file the create date of the new file is the creation date of the new copy
  • If I modify a file the modify date changes but not the create date

My point is that when you migrate files from one computer to another the create date can be reset, so your chronology is disrupted.

This functionality is already completely implemented in core Obsidian.
In global search, type two double quotes "" to search for empty string. This matches every file in a vault.
“Portion of the vault” is vague specification but maybe “path:search operator is what you are looking for.
Sorting by creation/modification date can be done by ↑↓ icon above search input box.
There are also icons to modify amount of displayed content or to copy sorted list of filenames into clipboard.
In order to use it as additional plugin which does not require to close another opened list of search results, consider supporting request Allow Multiple search panes at the same time

Awesome. I wouldn’t call that elegant but it works. Thanks.

Have you tried searching for [[2020-12-03]]?

This. I’ve exported and imported my notes across several note taking applications. I just imported a few thousand from Evernote into Obsidian today.

One note that I wrote in 2014 had a created and modified date of 2023! Luckily I put the actual date in the note content.

I say it all the time: filesystem metadata can be transitory over time, a victim of migrations and conversions. It’s best to put it in the file name if it needs to be permanent.

The idea that comes to my is using a spiral plot, where then length of the spiral represent time. It could be a variation of the current cloud plot that shows interconnection between notes (objects dimension) versus a chronology (time dimensions).
The inner part of the spiral contains the older notes; the newer are on the outer side of the spiral.
Would it be worth it to show links between notes across the timeline? I would look very confusing and crowded. But it would focus of activity in time.
