iCloud ran out of space and deleted the contents of my active file

I ran into an issue, and I don’t think I will find an immediate fix, but maybe someone else can benefit from this report.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Use iCloud as synching across devices
  2. Have Daily Note file open with content
  3. Run out of space in iCloud
  4. Continue using Daily Note by adding content

Expected result

My file continues to be store as normal on by Mac

Actual result

Instead, the entire file got erased. (I still had a backup online, but it was 24hrs old, and I still lost a good amount of data.)
Additionally, Finder can no longer find my Obsidian directory. I think this has been addressed by this forum post. even though, I have not yet found a resolution.

Environment

  • Operating system: macOS Big Sur Version 11.5.2
  • Obsidian version: v0.12.15

Additional information

If Cloud removes your stuff or forbids write access, I am not sure there’s anything we can do about it. There is a file recovery plugin Settings>File Recovery perhaps you can find something more recent there (it stores data in another location).

Yeah, that makes sense. Well I thought I would share in case there was any data loss prevention, which sounds like the File Recovery plugin was it!

The File Recovery helped! I found a good snapshot for my file and I recovered all my data.
Thank you for the tip!
