Turning on this setting is more than just a makeshift solution: Obsidian needs all the vault files to be permanently on the computer, this setting ensures exactly that.
That doesn’t solve everything, though. I always used this feature and I still get duplicates (but rarely) and an insane number of workspace files (but that doesn’t cause any problem).
