How to open new notes in a new pane (splitting the screen) automatically?

Hi,

I have watched some Obsidian tutorials online and noticed that when some users click on a link in their notes, Obsidian automatically opens a new pane on the right side of the screen to preview the new note (instead of opening a tab at the top). I couldn’t find that option in the settings. Do you know how I can do it? In general, where can I find the settings regarding opening new tabs and links in Obsidian? Thanks!

There is not a direct solution for that. But some workarounds:

Opening the same note in Split View:

Adding a hotkey to Split Right command. I added ⌘ + T for that. You can also do Split Down similarly.

Opening another note in Split View:

⌘ + ⌥ + Click does that in MacOS.

CTRL-ALT-click opens a link in a new split pane for me on Linux. I expect that would work on Windows too.

Or they could be using stacked tabs.

“Split panes” are called “tab groups” now (not to nitpick, that’s just the term people can search in the Help docs if they want to follow up).

Thanks! As others mentioned below, CTRL+ALT+Click opens the new tab in the right pane in windows as well.
