How to create a link to local file on MacOS?

Is there a straightforward way to link to a file on my local drive on MacOS?

On Windows I guess you can control+drag the file to an Obsidian note to create a link. Doesn’t work on MacOS. It creates a link but also copies the file to my vault.

The only way I’ve found is to copy the path to my clipboard, paste it into a browser window (which replaces spaces with %20), copy that and then paste to my note in Obsidian.

Problem is that it will not work with .doc files ('cuz it just creates a popup to download the file).

I tried creating the link and embracing in brackets: < but that just doesn’t work.

Not finding a plugin that will convert the link in MacOS format (only Windows).

Gotta b a way to do this!

Thoughts?

Thanks for this. I tried that but it doesn’t work. It creates a copy. I’ll try same in sandbox and report back. Maybe some other plugin is interfering.

Well, this is quick. It works as you said in sandbox, so clearly I have something installed that’s overriding this. If I can find it I’ll update.

hi Tesgin,
I installed the “Better File Link” plugin (GitHub - marcjulianschwarz/obsidian-file-link: A plugin for the note taking app Obsidian to add better external file links to your notes.). I’m under the impression it does exactly what you wish.
