How to annotate the existing images in a note quickly without the need to save images as a svg or excalidraw file

I want to be able to annotate (draw/write) an existing image in a note. I tried to use ‘Excalidraw: Crop and mask image’ command from command palette. Steps I follow -

  1. Select image in a note in editing mode
  2. Select ‘Excalidraw: Crop and mask image’ command from command palette.
  3. A side window gets opened with selected image in excalidraw drawing (see image).
  4. I can annotate on this drawing very well but for some reason, all annotations are in white ink in the original image on the note. Please see the image below -

Please help, how can I annotate the existing images in a note quickly i.e. without the need to save as a svg or excalidraw file.
