Hi, I have a similar use case for writing using Obsidian and ChatGPT.
I am still in the early process of learning what system is the most relevant for my use, so my answer is not really polished yet but it may help.
ABOUT HANDLING WRITTEN CONTENT
1) If I work on desktop:
Selecting the ChatGPT snippet and pasting it into Obsidian works perfectly: the Markdown will be pasted if you toggled the property for it do so in the app settings (Editor > Advanced > Convert pasted HTML into Markdown).
The rest is just tidying notes. My notes always have a frontmatter, then a heading 1 with the timeline events (if relevant), then headings 1 with a category (e.g, “Description of City”, “Guilds in City”, etc.). And I paste ChatGPT snippets inside subcategories or as quotes/callouts.
I entirely structure content myself in Markdown in my notes, but you can open a side-conversation with ChatGPT to ask what suits best your use case if you don’t know how to structure specific data/content. Just make sure to feed it all relevant data on your use case for it be really helpful.
2) If I work on mobile:
That’s where the real problem happens. Currently, the app does not allow to copy/paste in Markdown directly, even in Obsidian. So I have to export the account data into a HTML file in my email inbox if I want clean Markdown content in fast time.
Since the export is heavy and cannot be done frequently, in the meantime I just copy/paste from the app and tidy quickly in my notes (tips: a recent ChatGPT update allows to select the reply’s text directly, instead of having to open the reply fully with a long press). Then, when I have time, I batch edit a lot of notes with the proper Markdown from the HTML export. It’s tiring, but it works.
To work faster, I use the search bar in the HTML export (Ctrl+F on Windows), and I insert a few words of the snippet I’m currently working on (remember to add Markdown if present) so it finds it quickly.
I don’t have a better alternative right now, unfortunately… I hope ChatGPT allows copy/paste of Markdown on mobile app in the future.
FOLDER SETUP AND DEALING WITH IMAGES
My folder setup (sharing yours might help get more relevant answers):
_assets (folders for: attachments, banners, pictures, templates…). Usually for plugins and storage. That’s how I handle images, I have them stored here so they don’t crowd my notes folders. Attachments keeps PDFs and such, linked to notes. Banners is for frontmatter (a plugin). Pictures are like attachments but for characters and locations notes. Templates are to quickly insert frontmatter when creating a new note.
_backlog (this is my workspace actually, I drop ideas on-the-fly, notes to tidy later, quotes to remember for later, etc.).
_tracker (relevant stuff like character inventory, world events…).
01_Characters (Party, NPCs, Archived, Bestiary). This folder is dynamic, I keep it updated (except “archived”, the purpose is storing obviously).
02_Mechanics (Culture, Dangers, Events, Fauna, Flora, Guilds, Items, Jobs, Magic…). Stuff I want to link into notes directly, like a wiki would do.
03_Worlds (World 1, with subfolders consisting of each city, road, forests etc. ; World 2, with the same, etc.).
04_Sessions (sessions, recaps, archived content, dice rolls tables, ambiant musics…).
I’m curious to see what other people would reply, this is an interesting topic.
Hope this helps, happy writing!
