I agree, this should be a built in feature. Maybe use the “@” character the “_” character as the underline markdown natation. A hotkey would be nice but not necessary.
I prefer a short encapsulation method over a hotkey since you can select your text and press the key(s) for the character (** for bold) and it does the same as a hotkey.
