im a “noob” to obsidian. been trying to figure it out for about a week. seems great on paper…
trying get myself out of MS OneNote, buuttt… lets save 4 different web clippers not working for another day
i recently exported my onenote lib of 2844 .md files, around 37,300(images) files total with the images that came with it.
it takes obsidian about 3 minutes to launch. i can load steam and video game faster.
after 48 hours obsidian wont catch up. seems be stuck indexing the last ~300 files for day.
ive turned off index ocr & omniserch. it doesnt seem to make a difference on the performance hit im taking.
my desktop isn’t a rocket ship but its fairly powerful with and i7 6700 and 64g ram.
a text editor should impact it this much
any ideas of what is should look into first?
heres my debug info…

I had a similar experience on my Windows machine with a different app where the fix turned out to be to disable hardware acceleration. I’ve seen other threads where hardware acceleration doesn’t play nice with some processors and driver configs (in my case I have a 9th gen i5-9400F).
I was not able to find any hardware acceleration configuration setting for Obsidian, so my somewhat clunky (but for me acceptable) work-around was to install and run Obsidian under WSL2 instead, where the processor spiking does not reproduce.
What I found (just messed up personal experience):
On any OS, if you have lots of files the memory load raises as the system is indexing and re-indexing them (what for if the diifference in search result speed is two seconds?). So on weaker PCs when you switch indexing off, the memory load immediatly becomes ok.
I have no troubles with memory and CPU (acceleration, when memory is not enough?) on earlier Obsidian versions with small vaults.
On any Obsidian version, when you have 10k+ long notes the Memory load raises
When you browse the web with one pane by the Core web-viewer, say hello to about +20% Memory load.
On newer versions the memory load is higher even when you have less than 10 notes. Not 10k+. just 10.
Tech-geeks have PCs. The others have what they have. So the Tech Guys just don’t feel the difference with ther 64 gb Memory, newest CPU’s and other nice things. And that’s OK.
The newer Chromium is, the more sources it takes. What are they wasted on, if nothing is changed for the user? Well, on Tech Geek options! How to switch them off? Go to… and do… and 100k+ things… and then it crashes.
Obsidian is based on Chromium.
There are non-obsidian related processes that load memory when obsidian is on (trying to index the files you are working on, parsing app activity data…)
So, what I think:
Looks like the problem lies in Chromium core processes
The older versions can potentially help. They are based on older Chromium (the newer Chromium is the more memory it takes…)
The missing core plugins fuctionality can be added by community plugins on older versions
The more heavy notes you have, the more memory load you experience.
If there was a way to switch off indexing processes and perform indexing only when you want…
Hello. This thread has become a catch-all for various problems.
Indexing should happen only once. When it happens, you do see a popup notification with a progress bar (v1.8.9+).
We are aware that there should be a relatively high (1 CPU core utilized) during and shortly after startup while Obsidian is reviewing of how your vault looks like (if anything has changed). The time it takes is proportional to the number of files in your vault.
If you experience high CPU usage in other circumstances you need to enable Restricted mode, use the default theme and restart Obsidian. If it happens again under these conditions, please open a bug report and follow the bug report template.
