Hi! I ran into the same issue with my local obsidian vault (not using cloud sync). I created 8 groups for my local graph view. If I closed the app and reopened it the local graph groups would remain present, but they would disappear after a certain amount of time (for example multiple PC reboots without ever opening the obsidian app). And for the regular graph view the groups would disappear after closing obsidian just once. My best guess is that the issue was caused by not logging into my account within the obsidian app and after a certain amount of time the group settings are removed from temporary memory. After creating an obsidian account and logging in under Settings → General → Account → Your Account, the issue hasn’t returned. I will reply back here if that changes and the issue returns.
No, this isn’t right. Obsidian doesn’t store your data or settings in your account, whether you are logged in or not. Unless you bought and use Obsidian Sync, then it copies your local data to your remote vault, to sync it to other computers. But the settings are still stored in your Vault/.obsidian folder.
The only reason you need to log in to your Obsidian account is to access paid products like Obsidian Sync, Publish, etc. or if you purchased the Catalyst license.
The fact you logged in and haven’t seen the problem yet is just a coincidence.
The fact that you did see the problem at all might be related to this bug, if it exists. But for that, you’d need to provide all the information asked in the Bug Reports template to try to help recreate it. “Show debug info”.
It might also be caused by a community plugin. Or you might be stored in a cloud folder unknowingly. Some of the default folders in Windows and Mac get synced by OneDrive or iCloud by default. And those tools sometimes offload your files into the cloud, which could cause some of your settings to disappear or change.
