Gray screen when opening vault

My vault is stored in iCloud. After opening it on my laptop and closing it, I get a gray screen after the “loading plugins” message when I try to open it on my desktop computer.

What I’m trying to do

Open vault on Mac Studio after closing it on MacBook Pro

Things I have tried

Reopened vault on laptop. Closed all tabs and window on laptop then tried to open on desktop Mac. Made sure iCloud sync had completed.

One thing you can try that is fairly low impact:

With Obsidian (the vault) closed, move or rename the {VAULT-NAME}/.obsidian/community-plugins.json file. This will keep all your community plugins, but they will be disabled when you open the vault.

Hopefully the vault will open up after that. :crossed_fingers:

Many thanks! That worked. The weird thing is that I could open the vault on my laptop without any trouble–just the desktop Mac wouldn’t open it any more. Any idea what would have caused this?

Okay, great!

Something funky about a plugin, I’m guessing.

Now that you are back in, I would:

  1. Update all your community plugins.
  2. Turn one on and close-open the vault.
  3. Work for a bit.
  4. Turn one more on and work for a bit.
  5. Rinse and repeat.

You get it, but turning on one-at-a-time will make it easier for you to guess the culprit if it happens again. Everything may be fine with all your community plugins re-enabled, just a glitch, but you may have to remove that .json file again if things get jammed up.

Good luck!
