Flashcard clozes are showing as highlights and don't appear in Review flashcards

What I’m trying to do

Hello,
surprisingly the 1st question on making a flashcard with a cloze, but the note’s text shows the highlight due to the double equals at the start and end of the cloze text. The Review flashcards running doesn’t show any of the text, only the flashcards in the question::answer format.

Specs:
Desktop Raspberry Pi 5 desktop OS → Obsidian App Current version: v1.9.12 (Installer version: v1.4.16) → Spaced Repetition Version: 1.13.3.

Things I have tried

I tried:

  • backspacing in front of the double equals starters, which removed the highlight, however Review flashcards still doesn’t show any of the cloze text, just flashcard questions::answers.
  • I read the guide, discussions, Obsidian forum search: flashcard cloze and an Internet quality search: Obsidian flashcard cloze.

Based on the screenshot I assume you are using the Spaced Repetition plugin.

Since this is a plugin specific matter it’s a good idea to check if there’s any documentation offered by the plugin. (It does; Cloze Cards - Obsidian Spaced Repetition)

That said, can you check and see if the following setting is toggled on in the plugin’s settings?

Thanks. As per 1st post Specs (specifications), Spaced Repetition Version: 1.13.3 and guide also read.
Rechecked Plugin’s Flashcard Separators and is already enabled.
I disabled and re-enabled, however same challenge.

Hmm, I’m not sure what’s the issue here so let’s try and figure it out.

Can try the following,

  1. Disable all plugins except for Spaced repetition (Some have weird interactions)
  2. Create a new note. (Call it test or something)
  3. Add the ‘#flashcards’ tag
  4. Create a test inline flashcard (the one with ::)
  5. Review to see if the flashcard shows up (to test the note/tag is recognised)
  6. Delete the flash card and create a new cloze flashcard like A ==test== phrase
  7. Review and see if it works.

Based on the 1st post the cloze doesn’t show up at all, right? Or does it show up wrong?

If it’s the latter can you post a screen shot of it too?

Step 5. the test flashcard doesn’t show up
The other old decks with flashcards does function.

Can you check if the test file has the same tag as the one shown here?

i.e. see if it’s ‘flashcard’ instead of ‘flashcards’, etc.

And of course, check if the tag applied to the note is the same as well.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Yes, the plugin, original and test note all have #flashcards, plural rather than singular.

I also tried:

  1. disabling and re-enabling Spaced Repetition Version: 1.13.3 plugin
  2. running Review flashcards
  3. rebooting desktop Obsidian Current Version: v1.9.14 (Installer version: v1.4.16)
  4. running Review flashcards
  5. uninstalling Spaced Repetition Version: 1.13.3 plugin
  6. rebooting desktop Obsidian Current Version: v1.9.14 (Installer version: v1.4.16)
  7. re-installing Spaced Repetition Version: 1.13.3 plugin
  8. running Review flashcards
  9. rebooting desktop Obsidian Current Version: v1.9.14 (Installer version: v1.4.16)
  10. running Review flashcards
  1. Reinstalled plugin Spaced Repetition Version: 1.13.3.
  2. Deleted the Flashcards note, created a new Test note and cloze appears in Review flashcards.
  3. Re-added the faulty Flashcards note text to a new note named Flashcards1, ran Review flashcards, and the deck #flashcards/French_body doesn’t show the cloze.
  4. Added the working cloze text from Test note to the Flashcards1 note and deck #flashcards/French_body and the cloze in line 6 fails to show in the Review flashcards (the clozes in lines 2 and 3 do however present and function).
  5. Here’s the faulty file for the record, which might be useful in debugging and updating plugin code:
#flashcards
A ==test== phrase
The first female ==prime minister== of Australia was ==Julia Gillard==

I’m sorry but I have no idea what’s causing the problem.

I can use the exact lines you posted and get the clozes to show up without issue. My best guess is that either a third party (another plugin) is interfering, or your plugin’s settings were somehow messed up (unlikely since you have tried reinstalling).

If you don’t mind, try to create a new vault, install only the spaced repetition plugin and test clozes to see if it works.

After that try opening a new issue on the plugin’s github page.

That will get potentially get you the developers’ attention.

Good luck.

The challenge is narrowed down to any cloze below #flashcards/French_body, including lower decks like #flashcards/French_medicament_et_pharmacie and so on.

I

  1. copied the Flashcards note text
  2. cleaned the text of all the time stamps
  3. deleted the Flashcards note
  4. created a new note
  5. pasted the cleaned text
    Same challenge.
Seems like mixing clozes and flashcards doesn’t work.

Other clozes above the deck #flashcards/French_body and other Obsidian Notes work.
