File Properties view disappeared

I’m working with two vaults. In one of them, when I open the slide-in pane on the right, there was a magnifying glass icon at the top, and the contents of the pane was the file’s properties - tags at the top and so forth. In the other vault, that magnifying glass isn’t there, and I can’t figure out how to show the file properties pane.

While troubleshooting this, I tried turning off the “Properties view” core plugin, to verify that it was responsible for generating the “file properties” pane. This made the properties view and the magnifying glass go away, which tells me I’m on the right track. So I turned it back on, but the properties view and magnifying glass didn’t come back.

So now both vaults are missing the properties view.

  • Obsidian v1.6.7, Installer v1.6.7, on macOS ARM.
  • The vault that was working and now isn’t, is stored on the local disk and uses the git plugin to sync with other machines.
  • The other vault, that wasn’t working, is stored in iCloud (to sync with my iPad).

What I’m trying to do

See the file’s “properties view”.

Things I have tried

  • Manual troubleshooting, detailed above.
  • Searched the forum for anything relevant, nothing jumped out at me.

Have you checked the setting shown in the image below?

I thought that affected what gets shown at the top of the pane in “reading” view.

I just tried all three options. It shows or hides a list of tags at the top of the “reading” pane, but it doesn’t affect the availability of the “file properties” pane in the right-side slide-in thing, or add the icon that was there. All I have is the standard set - backlinks, outgoing links, all tags in the vault, outline of the current document, and “All properties”, which looks like a “file box”, and where selecting “tags” selects all documents which have tags in the pane at the far left.

… and brought back the missing icon I was looking for, which isn’t a magnifying glass, it’s a lowercase “i” in a circle … and clicking on that icon shows the missing info pane I was looking for.

Now I’m really confused.

Have you tried opening the command palette (CMD P) and choosing Properties View: Show File Properties?

That helps … it makes the missing “i in a circle” appear, and I’ll probably end up assigning a hotkey to it … but if the “Properties view” plugin adds two more possible panes to that right-side slider, why wouldn’t both panes be enabled by default when the plugin is turned on?

In the Sandbox vault or a new vault, when you turn on Settings > Core plugins > Properties view, only “All properties” appears in the sidebar. As you discovered, you need to run the command Properties View: Show File Properties to show that tab.

Maybe the reasoning is that not all notes/files are going to have properties, so there’s no need to show that tab unless specifically triggered by the user. Just guessing.
