Feature Request: Integrate Folder Notes and Enhanced Reordering as Core Features in Obsidian and Obsidian Publish

Overview:

As an educator utilizing Obsidian Publish to disseminate course content, the ability to attach notes directly to folders (Folder Notes) and to reorder files and folders intuitively are essential for effective content organization and student navigation. Currently, these functionalities are limited or require third-party plugins, and they do not integrate seamlessly with Obsidian Publish.

Proposal:

  1. Native Folder Notes Integration:

Functionality: Enable users to associate a note with a folder, allowing the folder itself to contain descriptive content. This approach facilitates better content segmentation and easier navigation, especially in educational settings.

Obsidian Publish Compatibility: Ensure that Folder Notes operate seamlessly in Obsidian Publish, allowing students to access folder-related notes directly.

  1. Enhanced Reordering Capabilities:

Functionality: Allow manual reordering of files and folders within the file explorer through drag-and-drop actions. This feature enables educators to structure course materials in a logical sequence, enhancing the learning experience for students.

Obsidian Publish Consistency: Ensure that the custom order set in the desktop app is reflected in Obsidian Publish, providing a consistent experience for students.

Relation to MAKE.md:

Both of these features are available in MAKE.md, where notes can be transformed into folder notes, allowing for nested note structures. Additionally, MAKE.md supports reordering items within a folder or tag by dragging and dropping them to the desired position.

These functionalities fundamentally redefine the structure of notes, making them more flexible and allowing them to be attached to different places within hierarchies. Implementing similar features in Obsidian and Obsidian Publish would enhance its utility for educators and other users who require structured and navigable content.

Benefits:

Improved Content Organization: Educators can structure course materials more intuitively, enhancing the learning experience for students.

Seamless User Experience: Native support for these features ensures stability and reduces reliance on third-party plugins, which may not always be compatible with Obsidian Publish.

Consistency Across Platforms: Implementing these features in both Obsidian and Obsidian Publish ensures that the organizational structure set by educators is preserved, regardless of the platform used by students.

Conclusion:

Integrating Folder Notes and enhanced reordering capabilities as core features in Obsidian and Obsidian Publish would significantly benefit educators and other users who require structured and navigable content. These enhancements would streamline content delivery and improve the overall user experience for both content creators and consumers.

As a college professor looking to exclusively use Obsidian Publish to disseminate course content, I find that integrating native folder notes and enhanced reordering capabilities would significantly improve the platform’s functionality. In Canvas, educators utilize modules to organize course materials sequentially, aiding in student navigation and comprehension. Similarly, implementing folder notes in Obsidian would allow for contextual information to be attached directly to folders, making them easily searchable and providing necessary context. Additionally, enabling intuitive reordering of files and folders would offer flexibility in structuring content hierarchies. These enhancements would not only streamline the organization of educational materials but also position Obsidian as a superior alternative to traditional learning management systems like Canvas, which often lack user-friendly interfaces. By adopting these features, Obsidian could better cater to the needs of educators and students, facilitating a more effective and engaging learning experience.

+1. I think folder notes feature should be in core functionality and not as plugin
