Perhaps not specific to this occurrence but iām seeing this error message Failed to open "" with the āPDF++ā plugin
I guess this errors happens when files are stored remotely (cloud, another partition, USB stick, etc)
Files should be stored locally in one of the users directories, ideally in ~/Documents
Iāve started experiencing this issue as well. I started using Obsidian about 6 months ago very regularly so I have a lot of information in there. I had two vaults, and both of them have files none of which are opening with the same error message FAILED TO OPEN āā. I saw a few messages saying that it worked if they opened in the default app and made some edits and re-opened. But that didnāt work for me (itās not opening in the default app).
I have all my .md files on my local desktop and the only community plug-in I had downloaded was calendar in both the vaults. I am noticing that my community plugins are also gone and any theme changes I had made have also been reverted back to the original setting. What can I do? I am a fairly new user and would love some help to restore this back to the way it was. Thanks!

- About the āFAILED TO OPENā: what is your Obsidian installer version? (If itās older than 1.8.8, the linked bug report said this would be fixed in 1.8.8).
- About the disappearing stuff: Are you storing your vault in a cloud tool? (And are you sure? Some folders are synced by default in Mac and Windows.) To me, things disappearing sounds like a cloud issue.
Hi Everyone - I am a new user and I just ran into this issue in the past week or so. I am on v.1.8.10 and still unable to open my notes. It seems sometimes random notes will open but today it seems like they all keep failing to open.
If anyone can help - please let me know. I have TONS of work notes in this vault that Iām afraid to lose.
First and foremost, make a backup of the data. Back up your Obsidian files - Obsidian Help

Hello there! Iām running into the same issue, receiving the Failed to Open āā error when attempting to open any of my notes. Iām using Obsidian v.1.8.10 and the vault is backed up on a Google Drive, with a local backup of the data on my mac.

I got this error until I updated quickadd and templater plugins, it seems that if the files are created using these plugins they were not openable in obsidian even though they were there. That is until I updated them, now all is good and right with the worldā¦
I was having this same problem and started to browse old posts.
What didnāt work for me:
- Temporarily removing the .obsidian file, restarting, letting it sync then restoring the original .obsidian file
- Closing Obsidian and modifying the affected file using another text editor line vscode (I used windows notepad) by adding text or a new line and then trying to open this newly modified file in Obsidian.
What worked:
- Restarting Obsidian on restricted mode
- Updating all my plugins
Iām not certain, but the affected note was using the two plugins Multi-Column Layout and Meta Bind. I think it was after updating these two that resolved my issue. Take this with a grain of salt as I did not check which plugins of mine needed updating so maybe these two plugins didnāt even need an update.
