Excluded file types deleted when syncing on new device

I have file types such as .tex that are not included in sync by default. On my pc, I have enabled Sync all other types.

When I install Obsidian for the first time on another device and set up a vault before having a chance to enable Sync all other types, those files are not synced but instead seem to be deleted from my remote vault.

Sync log on Android: “2026-07-10 12:00 - Deleting remote file [name].”

Sync log on Pc: “2026-07-10 12:01 - Server pushed (deleted or renamed) [Pixel 10 Pro] [name].tex”

I’m not sure exactly what the behavior should be here but it feels like a better option is a one time pop-up during set-up like, “You have additional file types in your vault, would you like to sync those as well?”

Hi.

You didn’t follow or include the bug report template so moved to Help

Respectfully, since the small pop-up shows, “Once you’ve done the above, delete everything above this line,” it’s not very clear that the template is hidden below that text. It gives the impression that that’s the end of the prefilled material so I control + A deleted it without knowing. From a quick google, it seems others have experienced this too.

With the forum software we are using, I think the template and instructions are our best option. We just hope that folks read and follow the template.

As for your issue: I have a vault synced to a remote vault with a bunch of unsupported file types syncing. I added in a .tex file and let it sync.

On another device I created a new vault, connected it to the same remote vault, and started syncing. After the initial syncing was finished, I toggled the Settings > Sync > Sync all other types setting. As soon as that was toggled, all those files (including the new .tex one) were downloaded to the new vault.

Was the deletion a one-time issue on your end or can you reproduce it consistently when connecting a new vault to Sync?

There are a few topics in bug-reports about Sync restoring deleted files or uploading old copies of notes when a device that’s been disconnected for a long time reconnects, but I don’t recall seeing a bug report for this specific issue (tho there may be one).

It occurred on two separate occasions when I connected my Mac and my Android phone.

I haven’t tried intentionally reproducing as I was a bit worried that about having to bulk restore files again if I can successfully reproduce. Were both devices active at the same time during your test?

Yeah I also had a search but I couldn’t see anything that matched exactly.

Yes. Same network and vaults open on both devices (desktop). If I have a chance later, I’ll try the same with a new vault on mobile.

Edit. Was able to try with a new vault on iPad. Same as before. Connect to remote vault → tap the vault name → Connecting...Start Syncing. Waited for it to finish and toggled Sync all other types. All the other types were downloaded to the iPad; no Sync activity in the desktop vault.
