Every time I delete a file in obsidian, it crashes

This puzzled me for a long time, and I don’t know why, delete any md file or link, when I click the delete button in the prompt box, obsidian will crash. This caused me to use windows Explorer only to delete the relevant files

I have tried to Uninstall and reinstall Obsidian but that didn’t work. Maybe It’s my computer?

I’m new to Obsidian and haven’t installed any plugins or used custom themes. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Where specifically are you storing your vault? Can you share the whole file path? (Hide your username or any private folder names, if you need to.)

I’m wondering if you are in some weird folder that has some cloud tool or permissions problems.

I’m not saying this is your issue, but I’ll share an experience from my end:

I have a vault in OneDrive (macOS), for reasons, and about a year ago out of the blue anytime I tried to delete or move a file Obsidian would hang. Not a crash, but hang for ~10 seconds or so.

When I got around to looking into it, I manually moved the vault to my home folder using the Finder. Opened the folder as vault and everything was smooth; no freezes with deleting or moving things around in Obsidian via commands or in the Files tab. I then manually moved the vault back into OneDrive, made sure it was set as always downloaded, and then opened the folder as vault again. I haven’t had any issues since.

Something to investigate, as rigmarole mentioned above.

C:\Users*****\Desktop\My_Notes\DeepLearning
and DeepLearning is the name of my vault.

Wow! Thank you. I try to copy my vault to another folder and open it in obsidian and it actually works. It solved my problem perfectly. I don’t know what’s wrong with my origin folder, I didn’t have any permissions or syncs on it or anything like that, it just looked like a normal folder on the desktop to me. It’s kind of funny. It seems that I am really a green hand hhhhh
Thank you so much for your assistance!!!

Your idea is completely correct, it is indeed the problem of the vault path, the problem has been solved, although I still do not know what is wrong with my source path.
thanks a lot!!!.

Oh GOD!! I just found out that it doesn’t seem to be a problem with the repository path, every time I create a new vault, I delete files successfully before exiting obsidian, and when I reopen the repository, the crash problem appears again. :sob:

The Desktop folder might be inside OneDrive by default. It might be a cloud tool problem. You should double check the OneDrive settings to make sure your Desktop is syncing or not.

And maybe try to move the vault into a folder you are 100% certain is not syncing. m

Otherwise I don’t have any more ideas yet.

What path did you move it to?

Just in D:\Notes, it is a whole new folder. Now the problem is that No matter where I move the vault, When I open it for the first time in Obsidian by ‘open folder as vault’, I can delete files(Deleting the first file will stall for a few seconds, and then it won’t). However, When I reopen it, the Obsidian will crash after I delete a file. Creating a new vault is the same, Files can be deleted normally only after just creating the vault. The problem arises again when the vault is reopened.

A new discovery :sob: . I found that when I open Obsidian, it will open the last vault I used. under this circumstances, no matter which vault I switch to in the vault list, deleting the file causes a crash. However, as long as I use the ‘open folder as vault’ function to open a vault, even if it is already in the vault list, then before Obsidian closes, the files in any vault can be deleted normally. This is so weird

Me and my friend wanted to do Collab type notes like sometimes i edit and sometimes he. Now i am facing the same issue here too, it does not crashes or anything but freezes even though the folder is at local now means fully downloaded.
worth Investigating issue.

Please open a new Help topic for your issue so we can keep this conversation focused. Thanks!

  1. Does it forget your current vault only when you crash? If you close Obsidian yourself, does it still get confused?
  2. Can you try going into your vault’s hidden .obsidian folder. Take a look at your settings and look for any conflicted files with “copy” or a number at the end.
  3. I wonder if you have some corrupt app settings. You might have to go into the app settings folder (not the vault settings) and clear a cache, or some bad files. (Backup a copy first, just in case.)
