Error writing to file winshell.dll in installation

Hello good people, I’m not the most technologically literate so do bear with me if there is some obvious solution I have not yet tried.

I have been trying to install Obsidian, to an external hard drive due to storage limitations, and have run into a problem whenever I have ran the installation wizard, as administrator or not. Every time I have tried to install it, one of two outcomes has come about:

  • An error message shows before installation is complete, along the lines of "Extract: error writing to file
  • C:\Users\myuser\AppData\Local\Temp\nsv796A.tmp\WinShell.dll, or,
  • The installation goes through, but it is unable to run since there is no obsidian.exe.

I’ve been looking for some quick troubleshooting but, honestly, I’m not sure what the issue is.

If you install the app to an internal drive, are there any issues?

Oh. Thanks for the obvious solution I have not yet tried. Did work.

You can keep your vault(s) with all the data elsewhere. As long as the drive/location/path is always available and mounted, Obsidian shouldn’t complain.
