Dear Obsidian Team,
Below are three focused feature requests to improve Graph View usability for nested tags, based on real-world use cases in research, strategic mapping, and information architecture.
1. Parent–Child Tree for Nested Tags
- Request: In Graph View, show child
#tags
connected only to their direct parent (e.g.,#A/B/C
connected to#A/B
, not to all ancestors). - Goal: Render a clear tree structure of tag hierarchies, as in the “Nested Tags Graph” plugin (drPilman).
- Value: Enables structured mapping of knowledge (e.g., industry subsegments, thematic outlines).
Boosts Obsidian adoption for research and strategic workflows.
2. Display Only Child Tag Name
- Request: Add option to show only the last segment of nested tags in Graph View (e.g., show
C
instead of#A/B/C
). - Goal: Reduce visual clutter, improve legibility of dense graphs.
- Value: Supports fast orientation in complex systems.
Makes Graph View practical for users mapping large knowledge domains.
3. Custom Color per Tag and Sub-tag
- Request: Allow color assignment per
#tag
or tag path (e.g.,#project/urgent
= red). - Goal: Visually distinguish tag types or hierarchies directly in Graph View.
- Value: Enhances clarity for vaults with >100 tags.
Encourages use of Graph View as an advanced visual tool.
These features align with Obsidian’s strengths in structured knowledge and customization. Their addition would meaningfully expand Graph View’s utility for advanced and professional use cases.
Kind regards,
