According to other posts on this topic, Obsidian should support the same languages Chrome supports for spellchecking. However, Chrome also supports Swiss language variants such as German (Switzerland) and French (Switzerland) and I can’t find any way to enable this in Obsidian.
Things I have tried
Because the Swiss variants from Chrome are missing in Obsidian, I’ve tried setting the language to German instead of German (Germany), but that doesn’t seem to include any Swiss spellings either.
Is there any kind of workaround for this, even if it involves copying over files from Chrome?
Please explain what you’ve already tried. Like have you added multiple languages in the settings? Have you read any other posts related to the Obsidian spellchecker?
You’re not the first to experience problems, and I’m not sure I’ll know the answer, but please provide a little more information so people can give qualified answers.
As I mentioned, I tried both setting the language to German and German (Germany), but they don’t include Swiss spellings. The Swiss variants are separate language entries in Chrome, but they are missing from Obsidian.
My other selected Language is English (United States), but disabling it doesn’t make a difference.
And I have read other posts as mentioned, but according to them, Obsidian should support the languages present in Chrome.
I just tried manually editing the Preferences file and adding de-CH to the list of selected dictionaries. It seems like it’s already there and working in the background, but it isn’t available in the GUI. So, I’m leaning towards classifying it as a bug instead of a new feature to request.
French (Switzerland) doesn’t seem to be supported at the moment, as I wasn’t able to add “fr-CH” to the Preferences file. And even if it was, I’m not really sure how I’d verify that it’s working, because the Swiss words such as “septante” and “huitante” aren’t marked as errors when using “French (France)”.
