I would like to be able to copy images from PDF Reader, for their further insertion into notes.
Not sure, but some PDFs has images flattened into the pages, hence extracting becoming challenging, or even impossible. But the best workaround is using PDF++ plugin, which has an amazing feature where you can select a region of the PDF and link that region and also embed it in your notes.
As far as I can tell from my experience, this is the case when both the text and the image illustrating the text are ordinary images inserted into a PDF file, which is the case when, for example, the PDF is a scan of an old book, the modern edition of which simply does not exist, and therefore no proper PDF version exists.
For me, this is more of an exception than something that occurs regularly.
Thanks very much for the tip.
And it is indeed a workaround, but it is more relevant to the feature request I left a link to in the “related feature requests” - PDF deep links for pdf images.
The reason for this is that I only put the PDF in the vault temporarily while I’m reading the book. I don’t store PDFs in Obsidian’s vault permanently because a PDF file size several hundred megabytes is not that uncommon for me, and I don’t want to increase the size of my vault
unnecessarily - it just makes it harder to back up and more mobile in general. If I use this feature in the PDF++ plugin, then when I delete a book from the vault after reading it, the inserted link will simply cease to be valid.
Therefore, copying the image itself, and pasting it into a note (and thus creating its file in the attachments folder), seems to me a more reliable and convenient way to use (save) images in notes
I also prefer to avoid overuse of plugins for security reasons and to keep my system simple.
And since this feature seems basic to me, I thought a native implementation of it might be appropriate.
Once again, thank you very much for your reply!
Aah, in this case, the plugin won’t be a perfect fit for you. Your point is valid, in terms of embedding images without linking them, so the images remains intact even when the source of it has been deleted.
This actually gave an interesting feature idea for the PDF++ plugin itself, where instead of fetching a link from the PDF, a screenshot of that region can be pasted into the note and that image will be linked to that specific region from the PDF. So now, even if the PDF has been deleted, the image will still be visible, only the link won’t work.
(An update on this )
Looks like this is already possible in the PDF++ plugin : [FR] Embed rectangular region from the PDF as image. · Issue #321 · RyotaUshio/obsidian-pdf-plus · GitHub
Ok, that does work, thanks, I’ll add it to Current workarounds.
At first I thought that the images would be smaller than the original, as if I had just taken a screenshot of the screen, but for some reason it turns out that the pasted images are even bigger than if I copy and paste them with another software… But it’s not critical. Better more than less - the size difference is not that significant.
