I use Obsidian as an archive, that creates a lot of notes. because of that, for clarity - some things are stored in separate vaults. That created an idea - since it is all just files, why not connect one vault to other temporarily?
Proposed solution
Plugin need to be installed in both vaults. In the settings connection is established.
Now, when enables - vaults are semi-merged, you can see all files of the other vault in a separate folder or something. It works as always. They show in the quick switcher, (and can even be moved?)
Links also works normally.
When disabled, all other files disappear, links stay, but will ask about opening other vault.
What’s important that it is for local vaults, not some sort of sync
Not to say that this wouldn’t be useful, but I think you’re just making things more complicated for yourself by separating out your data like that. If you’re finding yourself wanting to link notes between vaults, isn’t that a sign that they should be in the same vault?
I think I probably use Obsidian similarly to you based on saying you use it as an archive. I’m not in school, nor am I a writer. I work in IT and mostly use it as a sort of diary and glorified todo list. However my most frequent method of interaction with the vault is via my Daily Notes. I have an enormous amount of Tags that I structure hierarchically, typically like #Customer/Building/Room so I can easily filter down to things I’ve done in a specific location. Like “Todo check TV in #whateverspace”
To keep my work and personal separate though, I just have three gigantic Top level folders. Work, Personal, and Daily Notes. So everything can link to everything if need be. When I don’t want to see work stuff, collapse the work folder, simple as.
Is there a particular reason that this sort of solution wouldn’t work for you?
Main reason, is that i move using the quick switcher.
While i do use links too, it is mainly to link certain topics so they are not lost forever.
But it is true, that maybe improving the quick switcher is a better plan
Still, ability to connect vaults, or have vaults-in-vaults
Is much cleaner, as it has a lot more potential the just that.
