Compose key does not work with some characters

Compose key does not work for inserting certain characters. I am using the English (US) layout with Caps Lock disabled and assigned as compose key in KDE Plasma. For me, I cannot insert the Rupee (₹) sign, but others have reported more characters, like in this post: Workaround for compose key (Linux / Gnome)

Steps to reproduce

Press Compose key + = + r in any text box.

Did you follow the troubleshooting guide? [Y/N]

Y

Expected result

₹ is inserted

Actual result

₹ is not inserted

Additional information

I already searched for duplicates and there were 2 from 4 years ago, so I created a fresh one.

The compose key functionality is seems to work fine for me. Confirmed for all examples from the mentioned topic - ' + e -> é, ~ + n -> ñ, = + r -> ₹ in the editor/search/command palette. Tested using the us layout.

But I noted that some symbols rendered will depend on the font you use (for text), so it may be the root cause. Using “Rubik” font = + r produces (Indian rupee), but using “PT Serif” it produces (Russian ruble).

My setup: Artix(Arch) Linux, X11, XKB, IBus, Vim mode in Obsidian. Though I’m also using a window manager, instead of a desktop environment like Gnome.

@Everything2067 Out of curiosity, if you force obsidian to run in x11/xwayland mode, does it work?

obsidian --ozone-platform=x11

After I moved to KDE Plasma on Wayland, Compose key also stopped working for me. The solution was to change KDE input method.

  1. Install fctix5.
  2. Turn it on in System Settings → Keyboard → Virtual Keyboard.
