Closing the main window while secondary windows are open makes obsidian restart in vault selector mode

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open a note in a new window.
  2. Close the main Obsidian window.

Result: The entire application closes. Upon reopening Obsidian, you’re prompted to select a vault instead of it automatically opening the previously used vault.

Expected result

  • The main window closes, but the note in the new window should remain open.
  • After closing the new note window, reopening Obsidian should restore the main window automatically, without requiring a vault selection.
  • Ideally, there should also be a way to open the main window if only the single-note window is open.

Actual result

  • Closing the main window causes the entire app to shut down, including the new note window.
  • Reopening Obsidian prompts you to select a vault instead of loading your standard vault automatically.

This is not a bug but how the app works.

Yeah, I was wondering if this is the intended behavior. It’s not how other apps on macOS typically work, so I thought it might be worth starting a discussion here. I’m curious to hear what other users think about this.

Maybe it’s just me who finds this a bit annoying, and if that’s the case, I completely understand if this won’t or can’t be changed.

Yes, closing the main window while secondary windows are open does create the problem you discribed. We’ll look into that
