So all the demos show that if you click on the backlink, that note will appear in the main pain. The help even says this:
By default, when you click something, it will open in the active pane. The active pane is marked with highlighted bar under the title, and its title is more visible than the inactive panes.
When I click on the backlink nothing happens. I can right-click and open in a new pane, but not a regular click.
In the Internal Link note from the Obsidian Help vault
Must click CTRL + LEFT Click on the backlink [[note]].

Thank you for this, this is a life saver. I was wondering why it wasn’t working for me either.
I wonder if it’s because it’s a Windows issue and the obsidian official tutorials and most free tutorials out there are Mac users?
Either way, the official tutorials should be updated to reflect this!
