Please implement this. It has been FIVE years!

Along with everyone here, I’m very confused how this is the default functionality without any way to change it.

I’ve found this community plugin “Open Tab Settings” (sorry no links allowed in posts) which adds some sane options.

Please implement this feature and add default option to always open table in new tab. It is difficult and unnecessary to always press control key. open in new tab plugin is a good effort but it don’t work in many cases.

I want to open links in a new tab 99℅ of the time.

+1.

Please consider this.

As a new user and recently reading about how plugins can be security risk it would be a great feature to have natively.

I just installed the “Open in New Tab” plugin,
and it seems to work, (many thanks to the author,)
but judging by what the author himself has written,
this is a feature that would be best to bake into Obsidian.

Can we sponsor the implementation of this feature?

It is super important to make a default option to open links in a new tab and that has to be in core features. Right now the only way to achieve this is to use Obsidian Open In New Tab Plugin.

+1 needed!

OMG, please!

Just add that as configuration option!

I would like this to be default as well. +1!

Signed up so I can plus one this. Ultimately while it might be a smarter feature to open in place, it’s unintuitive since we’re used to the default behavior of opening a new pane. Please add a feature flag that’s accessible to users.

You can open a linked note in a new tab without extra plugins or settings. Create a link to another document using double square brackets `[]`. Once the link is created, hold the cmd key when hovering over the link and a preview window appears. While holding cmd, select the “open link” arrow in the preview’s top-right corner to open the note in a new tab.

Chiming in to note two things:

  1. +1 to this FR. It would be a very nice if this was a configurable option, just so we don’t have to install a plugin for it. I guess I am just used to IDEs and prefer having files open in a new tab :man_shrugging: . Just my 2 cents though – and thanks Obsidian team for all the work you guys do each day to make this product awesome!

More importantly though,

  1. I found yet another plugin that solves this problem, and I haven’t actually seen it mentioned in this thread yet! And so I wanted to share it – it’s called Open Tab Settings , by Jesse R S Hines on Github.

I like this one in particular, because it seems to be more recently updated than some of the other options (Updated just 5 days ago at the time of writing!), AND it has super extensive customizations options that I think would let anyone configure their perfect setup.

Just wanted to share it – I’m not the creator, but it’s a really nice option that I think anyone reading this thread should be aware of

Support this request for “Open in new tab by default” as I always work in webbrowsers by clicking a link with right mouse button, then selecting “open in new tab”, I like to have many tabs open as it eases navigation between information in my opinion and experience.

Middle mouse “key” is a wheel in my case and very inconvenient.

So I will try the “Open Tab Settings” by Jesse Hines but think in the long way, this function should be implemented as a native Obsidian option.

Seems to be restricted to Apple systems…

…and a litte complicated.

But I have to revise my last post as my preferred method:

  • Right mouse click
  • then “open in new tab”

seems to work ?!? :upside_down_face:
Native or after I installed the mentioned “Open Tab Settings” plugin ?

Adding my voice to “open new tab by default” feature request!
