It’s been several years and I still struggle with this.

+1 for this! I use Desktop a lot, but Mobile even more.
Ugh… By the way, Jetbrains IDEs have this feature where if you single click a file it will open a new temporary tab to show the file’s content and will use that same tab if you single click another file afterwards. But if you double click a file or start editing it it will turn it into a persistant tab. This is imo the ideal behavior. Really don’t understand why these usability black holes are not remedied by the Obsidian team.
Guess I’m throwing my hat in the ring, too. I find the default functionality very frustrating, and would love the option to choose either open in new tab all the time or preferably VS Code reuse tab functionality.
Use case or problem
The default behaviour when opening a file is to replace the current/active open file with the new one, which gets more irksome every time.
Proposed solution
Add a configuration option to change the default behaviour from replacing the currently active/open file to opening the selected file in a new tab.
Current workaround (optional)
I have to remember the app is going to screw me over and instead right-click on the file I want to open and explicitly chose “open in new tab”

Use case or problem
As a VSCode user, first I really hated it when I had a document open, I would use CtrlO and it would replace it with the new one. I hated that I always had to remember to first click on the + button and only then open a new document.
Obviously, it was just my ignorance as after I searched the internets for tens of minutes I found that I can actually use Ctrl↵ to achieve exactly that - which was always written at the bottom of the Open dialog itself .
Anyway, my muscle memory is hard set on the default VSCode action - open in a new tab, so even if I try to remember it, it just doesn’t work.
Proposed solution
I would like to have this by default. Never replace a document, always open in a new tab. Let me close unwanted tabs myself.
- Allow to configure the default behavior of the Quick switcher with a new setting option: “Swap Enter and Ctrl+Enter to replace or open in new tab”.
Hey, you can use Ctrl↵ when on a file in the Quick switcher dialog to open it in a new tab. There is shortcuts to
- open in new tab
- open in new group
- open in new window (it’s unlisted, ctrl+shift+alt+enter)
It’s not optimal, but at least something.

A simple toggle for ‘Open Files in New Tabs’ of something would be of great value, so we don’t need to go to the Keyboard for this specific function. I know we can also use a scroll-click to do this, but sometimes I on my laptop and that would not be possible on the trackpad.
Also, for me, I end up losing quite some time when I want to have two specific files open, and just click to open one and it goes to the ‘current’ opened one, so I have to go back and open in a new tab, and then go the other one that I want and then open in the current tab.
I use my Daily Notes to navigate through notes created on that day and sometimes I need to go to two Daily Notes, to open my Worklog for the day and if I forget the ‘ctrl’ key or the 'scroll-wheel click; , I need to take some time to re-organize myself (I know is not much but having some disabilities makes this a lot worse for me personally), by going back and re-starting the steps.

I just spent 5 minutes hunting the settings for this before remembering that I had to install a ‘community plugin’ to enable this most basic of features.

Are we serious this topic is 6 years old and we are still missing the simple toggle of opening notes in the new tab by clicking the link/document in the sidebar?
How is this so divisive?
