Choose a folder whenever a new note is created from a link

Hi @nickwild,

On it - stripped a skeleton from my vault to share a working demo. Still need to find a few more hours for documentation to avoid raising more questions than providing answers. Update to follow.

I would be very, very grateful for this functionality. It would be extremely helpful for chaotic people like me.

Hi @nickwild, hi @Iconca,

I posted my solution to the challenge of choosing a folder when a new note is created here:
Folder & Template suggester during note creation - Share & showcase - Obsidian Forum

I hope you’ll find something useful in the post.

Hi, at first glance it seems a bit complicated for my abilities. Still, I will try to understand it while having a little more time, so thanks already for the effort.

Another potential workaround that I just came across due to my own searching/process building.

Obsidian Settings

  1. Core Plugin - Note Composer Settings
  2. Set the Text After Extraction option to Link to new file

In A Note

  1. Highlight text you want to become the link.
  2. CTRL + C to Copy It
  3. Right Click > Extract Current Selection OR Open the command palette > Note composer: Extract current selection…
  4. Type in location based on your folder structure. IE: Level 1 Folder/Level 2 Folder/ (the list updates itself as you type) and then once you are on the folder level you want the file to be in, CTRL + V to add the copied text, thus naming your file.
  5. Hit enter to create the new note.
  6. This will create a new note, named after the copied text, linked from the original note in []'s, in the folder you want.

Please add an option to Files & Links → New notes default location

I want to start using the workflow in kepano’s elegant sample vault: he creates all his notes by clicking on wikilinks and saving them in the root of his vault.. He seems happy to keep them all there, but I am not.

I (and many others would be happy if a new option were added to Files & Links → New notes default location

  • Vault root
  • Same folder as current file
  • Specific folder
  • Ask me each time ← new

Thanks for considering it!
