I like to see empty checkboxes and checked ones in tables.
Here is my cheat, or workaround. It uses:
- Espanso to do text replacement https://espanso.org/
- a little more typing
I installed Espanso (on Mac) and set up these text-replacement rules:
When I type [–] and [xx] , Espanso replaces them immediately with
☐ . I believe these are Unicode characters.

I don’t mind a) installing Espanso and b) typing a few extra characters to get reasonable-looking checkboxes. They don’t work with Dataview, etc. but I don’t need them to.
