Hi everyone.
I’ve spent several years building an Obsidian workflow dedicated to creating psychologically consistent fictional characters.
It combines structured personality traits, moral dilemmas, relationships, occupations, statistics and templates to help writers create believable characters.
Note on language: Since Spanish is my native language, most of my screenshots are in Spanish, but I’ll explain everything clearly below!
Folder Structure & Setup: Here is a quick overview of my folder setup:
-
Templates Folder: Contains my character sheet template (e.g., “Character 01”).
-
Explanatory Documentation: Personal reference guides explaining how the vault setup works.
-
Stats Model & Personality Ranges: Frameworks and options for stat models across various personality dimensions (such as cognitive, social, moral, etc.).
This part contains basic information such as name, age, date of birth, etc.
Character Breakdown & Stat Categories: I divided my document into different sections to make character interpretation much clearer (note: this is just a preview, not the full section).
Here, I use tags like soc, cog, vol, int, emo, mor, fis, and men, which stand for:
-
soc— Social -
cog— Cognitive -
vol— Volition / Willpower -
int— Intrapersonal -
emo— Emotional -
mor— Moral -
fis— Physical -
men— Mental
How it works:
I assigned various values to represent character behaviors. Each value helps guide the character’s decisions so their actions and internal logic remain consistent.
Additionally, when prompting or working with AI, these stats make it easy to track whether a character is staying on their intended path or veering off-track, allowing you to fine-tune their behavior to your liking.
Concept & Stat Justifications:
I also built additional sections to further develop each character:
-
Concept Section:
This serves as a starting point to get an initial high-level idea of the character. Since it’s a quick first draft, this section is fluid and changes often. I use AI here to compare generated concepts against my original ideas to check if the personality I crafted feels right and cohesive.
-
Stat Justification (Backstory, Deep Psychology, Morality, etc.):
This section provides context for why a character has certain stats.
-
Each subsection features key guiding questions designed to help you analyze and understand your character from specific perspectives.
-
This ensures that even side characters have a clear explanation for their behavior and a distinct personality, pushing you to think deeper beyond surface-level traits
-
Full Template Example & Dynamic Stat System:
Here is a preview of what the full character sheet looks like. I’m not sharing every single detail yet, as I plan to release the full project in the future, but I’m actively using it and finding it extremely useful.
Why it works so well:
-
Character Consistency: The combination of guiding questions and stat limits forces you to think within boundaries so the character stays true to form. If there’s an apparent contradiction between a stat and their psychology/backstory, the template gives you room to justify it.
-
Versatility: Whether you need a quick NPC/random character or want to build a deeply fleshed-out protagonist, the template scales with how much detail you choose to complete.
Dynamic Stat Combinations & Scale:
-
Stat Synergy: Stat values don’t exist in a vacuum; combining specific stats highlights complex behaviors beyond basic physical traits. While low physical stats obviously mean weakness, other stat pairings can reinforce traits like manipulativeness or narcissism, keeping character behavior consistent and on-track.
-
The Scale (-5 to +5): I use a -5 to +5 scale, paired with descriptive keywords for quick intuitive understanding. I also keep detailed personal documentation that breaks down the exact scoring criteria if I ever need a quick refresher.
Sorry I couldn’t include more screenshots—I’m limited to a maximum of 5 images per post. Thank you so much for reading!
I’d love to hear your thoughts! How do you handle character sheets, stat systems, or deep character building in Obsidian? Any feedback or suggestions are welcome!
