Canvas: Simpler way to pan

Use case or problem

panning in canvas view is complicated.

What I’m trying to do

Since I pan very very much in canvas, I want a simpler way to pan in canvas view

having to hold spacebar and LMB together all times, is irritating.

  • Why is the LMB needed?
  • why is Obsidian sticking to Photoshop panning shortcuts?
  • What’s the gain to hold also mouse buttons ?

Proposed solution

  1. hold only the spacebar to activate pan mode,
  2. move the mouse around to pan.

Current workaround (optional)

Panning is hard coded, so there’s nothing I could try.

Changed title to describe the request instead of the problem (was “Canvas - Panning is complicated”).

3 posts were split to a new topic: Fixed-sized notes (like index cards) in canvas

I use X-Mouse Button Control (with Win10/11). Set up so that Right Button + scroll = pan left/right.

I also recently bought a Logitech M650 mouse that natively does side button+scroll = pan left/right

Thanks gRobert56,

good tip. I know on Mac there’s Karabiner, but on Linux I wouldn’t know, need to see. Spacebar (held) to enter pan mode, mouse without any button click or hold to move around freely. No idea how I should rebuild this.

Yours is the most pragmatic way to solve this issue. Still, panning is something we do over and over and over again, when topical canvas boards get really big.

So, asking the devs to improve panning with easier accessibility design is a gain for everyone, imo.

For some reason my topic has been marked as solved.

No idea, how I checked my topic as solved, I don’t consider this topic yet as solved.

Cawlin, could you please see what happened?

I’m not sure what happened my best guess is that it’s a glitch. The message says that hittjw solved it in post 1, but they don’t have posts in this thread anymore and post 1 is the original post (yours). Maybe something happened when I split the off topic posts into a new thread. Or maybe their post got accidentally marked as the solution and I didn’t notice before splitting it out? (I don’t think so, but maybe?)

I’ve removed the timer, but I haven’t yet found a way to unmask it as solved. I’ll try to figure it out. Sorry for the confusion!

Update: Fixed it by marking another post as the solution and then unmarking it (and removing the timer again).
